Becoming a Wellness Coach

Updated: Oct 3, 2019

Hello! My name is Rebecca Danae Cortés. Thanks for joining me here!

Today I want to share some of my experiences that led to me becoming a wellness coach. I’ve suffered from Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) since I was about 10 years old. Basically, I have a steadily high level of inflammation in my body which frequently manifests in painful skin ailments. I dealt with constant pain for many years and I was too embarrassed by my sores to tell anyone or seek help. I was stuck.

I learned to hide my physical pain and just tried to carry on. In school, I participated in all sorts of sports and other extracurricular activities pretending I wasn't in any pain at all. On a scale of 1 to 10, my pain was usually an 8, 9, or 10 but I somehow endured every day convinced that I had to keep my secret and just wait for the pain to go away on its own.

Although I eventually sought the help of medical professionals at my university, it wasn’t until I did my own research and employed comprehensive wellness practices that I finally began to heal. At that time, there had not been many medical studies done about HS and the doctors I worked with were typically unfamiliar with my condition.

At 23 years of age, after 13 years of sores without relief, I tried elimination dieting just to see if it might help. It did help! And I was able to share my experience with doctors who were excited by my progress although they had not expected to see this change brought on by nutrition alone. I was done feeling isolated and hopeless in my pain. Instead, I started on a path toward vitality, learning about food as medicine, sharing with loved ones, and finding wellness practices that work for me to improve my health.

Over the years I've seen a major reduction in sores and pain. When I do have pain, I heal much faster. I've healed from a tree nut allergy. I haven't relied on treatment for asthma or seasonal allergies as I did for many years. I am well and pursuing greater wellness all the time.

Now I coach others to do the same by facilitating growth in their own wellness practice. I offer Foundational Coaching which can be applied to any topic that my clients want to explore, be it physical, professional, mental, or otherwise. I use internationally accredited coaching techniques and take a holistic approach to making healthy changes.

Today I'm 29 years old, 19 years into my own wellness journey and helping others along theirs. It's a joy to walk with clients who are finding a new path in life and in wellness. If you’re feeling stuck today, join me in coaching and together, we’ll gain insights that unlock new levels of progress toward your unique goals.
